In 2021, I sold the business practice. Right about that time, I found myself separated from my husband of 17 years, lawyered up, mired in the messy emotions and financial burdens of divorce, and parsing out the pieces of a life I built with my partner into piles of assets and liabilities. Stressful? Yes. But gut-wrenching is more like it.
In our case, the process of separating our lives caused us to see that we wanted a future together, not apart. If “you only live once,” we wanted to experience the adventure together, not apart.
But if one of us had envisioned a better future without the other, divorce would have been the key to freedom and a life of possibility.
That experience changed me. It changed how I view the legal process of divorce, which is broken (to say the least). And it gave me a renewed sense of purpose and a deeply rooted understanding of what “lawyer as counselor” means to me.
Today, Brava Law serves the needs of families mired in life’s messiness. Our mission is to free good people from the trap of miserable relationships that no longer serve them. We provide fierce advocacy for clients when “friendly” isn’t an option, ensuring their interests are vigorously protected. And for divorcing couples who want to part as friends or healthy co-parents, our One-Fee Divorce Alternatives are the key to a liberated future for your family.
YOLO. So create the life you want. Go have a great adventure with “your person.” Rely on one another when life gets lifey. Intentionally move toward one another, not apart.
But if the person who was once “your person,” has become the primary source of your pain, let them go. Paint a picture of a beautiful life without them and then make it real. Sometimes, YOLO means Get the Divorce. If that’s you, I’m here for the legal stuff.
Fun Facts: I have a copy of the Complete Essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson in every room of my home and office; I eat M&Ms by color group (read into that whatever you like); and I dream of living in an adult-sized treehouse (with air conditioning . . . think “glamping” not camping). I have two pocket beagles and a caique parrot who says, “poop.”
